Don't Drag Nsukka Diocese into Your Political Games, Re-Ekweremadu Extoled for Exceptional Leadership

By Fr. Emmanuel I Asadu, Director, Social Communication's Commission, Catholic Diocese of Nsukka.

There is nothing wrong with supporting a political office holder, but striving to win his/her attention by seeing every activity as an avenue to win him/her political points by all means is unethical. This is contingent upon the fact that no one can achieve a good end through a bad means. If not, the axiom, ‘the end justifies the means’ would have been laudable. This happens because the praise singers that hover around political office holders continue to create the illusion of inexistent reality of success for them; thus their bane. They shield them from feeling the true pulse of the public whom they are serving. They continue to give them the impression that their actions are generally accepted. And this is why most public office holders act like men without ears. For as it is said, the eye that sees all does not see itself without a mirror. It is this praise singing culture that is responsible for the narcissism prevalent among public office holders in Nigeria.

The growing penchant of political praise singers seeking to score cheap political points by writing and publishing unfounded stories is becoming alarmingly worrisome. Why should a journalist, maliciously deceive the public on the events of Sunday, May 16, 2021 by writing and publishing an entire fiction that never happened?

On Sunday May 16, the Catholic bishop of Nsukka diocese Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, had his normal Sunday Mass in his Cathedral church. It is worthy to note that in the Cathedral church of Nsukka diocese, 'thanksgiving’ (where people bring their gifts to thank God for favours received), is not entertained at the bishop's 10am Mass. So one wonders how Opera News published such fabricated story of ‘thanksgiving mass’ said to have taken place at St Theresa’s Cathedral Nsukka, from a dodgy website obviously specialised in fake news.

Sunday, May 16 was World Day of Communications, and the bishop during his homily, among other things urged the people and much more importantly the journalists, to always be sincere in their reportage, especially in this era of social media. A journalist, who perhaps was in the mass and listened to the homily of Father Bishop urging the journalists to always be sincere, demonstrated that this message of sincerity of the journalists is needed so much more, now, more than at any other time, by reporting just the opposite of what happened.

By saying that “the bishop likened Ekweremadu to Apostle Mathias who the rest of the apostles gathered to choose when Judas Iscariot betrayed….” which the bishop never said, it is a sure sign that these people are up to something sinister. The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka never made mention of any name during his homily, neither did any 'thanksgiving' take place as purported by Opera News. It was shortly before the final blessings that Father Bishop observed that he could see new faces in the church. These were his exact words: "I can notice the presence of some unusual faces in our Cathedral church. I presume many of them came on a pilgrimage to our Cathedral, the best and most lovely in Nigeria, for now. Be that as it may, I also recognize the face, in spite of the mask, of the former Deputy Senate President, if he's actually the one I'm seeing. So we say welcome to you and to all those who are visiting our Cathedral Church for the first time." The mass which was streamed online can still be watched by anyone who seek the truth, through the bishop’s Facebook page.

The Catholic church is a mother and welcomes her sons and daughters with open hands. But we advise that those who want to make political merchandise of every activity should desist from bringing such into the church. And stop using the bishop’s name for political gains. Come to church and pray to God.
